Book Descriptions

Flanimals

It looks like the idea of disgusting creatures secretly living amongst us is quite appealing to children and to some British adults, too.

In any case, the Flanimals are a huge success in Britain, although (or because) "lots of Flanimals were hurt during the making of this book". From the famous comedian Ricky Gervais (who's written, directed and starred in The Office) comes this monsterbook that basically consists of

 - the description of Fanimals ("Frappled Humpdumbler (Omloid Valve-Winkler): This squiddy monj-dingler scrundles along snuffling in one direction and oggling in the other"),

 - their behaviour ("The Puddloflaj hates being ridden by the Grundit, that's why the Grundit does it. If the Grundit jumping on the Puddloflaj is too big for it, the pressure can pop the Puddloflaj's eyes out")

 - and a final test for the attentive reader ("Which way is the Hemel Sprot Running?").

Got the idea? Well, if you enjoy 100% imaginative and pure, vicious silliness, give it a try (and know that there are three more books, the fake comments on the backs referring to each other).  I'd suggest the book's suitable for children aged 7 and older.

 - the description of the Flanimal Kingdom ("The very earliest form of Flanimal life was Splorn")

- Flanimal Evolution ("Fossil evidence shows there was a strain of Blungings that evolved millions of years ago but died out. It didn't die out because it wasn't as well-equipped as modern-day Blungings - (...) we think it just got bored")

 - Flanatomy

 - a Spotter's Guide with more Flanimals ("Skwunt (Squintly Clamgullit): Born with eyes inside its gapping nosh trap, this cloppered valve sclap slams its mouth shut to stop other Flanimals poking its eyes for a laugh")

 - their behaviour ("Dweezle Muzzbug after metamorphosis from creepy-crawly into screamy death thing")

 - and a scale chart as well as a poster for your child (you might want to remove this...)

Flanimals of the Deep

It looks like the idea of disgusting creatures secretly living amongst us is quite appealing to children and to some British adults, too.

In any case, the Flanimals are a huge success in Britain, although (or because) "lots of Flanimals were hurt during the making of this book". From the famous comedian Ricky Gervais (who's written, directed and starred in The Office) comes this monsterbook that basically consists of

- Chapter 1: In the Beginning

- Chapter 2: The Diversity of Life

- Chapter 3: The Flanisaurs

- Chapter 4: The Mulons

and a sticker sheet.

The Flanimals' development brought a certain development of the books, too, which have something like a storyline by now.

If you enjoy 100% imaginative and pure, vicious silliness, give it a try (and know that there are three more books, the fake comments on the backs referring to each other).  I'd suggest the book's suitable for children aged 9 and older.

Flanimals - The Day of the Bletchling

It looks like the idea of disgusting creatures secretly living amongst us is quite appealing to children and to some British adults, too.

In any case, the Flanimals are a huge success in Britain, although (or because) "lots of Flanimals were hurt during the making of this book". From the famous comedian Ricky Gervais (who's written, directed and starred in The Office) comes this monsterbook that basically consists of

- Chapter 1: Blugs

- Chapter 2: The Super Blug

- Chapter 3: The Day of the Bletchling

- Chapter 4: No!

and a poster.

The Flanimals' development brought a certain development of the books, too, which have something like a storyline by now. In this last book there's a kind of final battle in which the Flanimals are extinct. But there's a bit of Splorn left, so who knows what will happen...

If you enjoy 100% imaginative and pure, vicious silliness, give it a try (and know that there are three more books, the fake comments on the backs referring to each other).  I'd suggest the book's suitable for children aged 9 and older.

The Story of the Treasure Seekers

A timeless classic by Edith Nesbit (The Railway Children), still well-loved because it portrays children just as children; neither are they Victorian role-models for good behaviour, nor do they represent victims or warnings.

The totally believable Bastable children from this book play and quarrel, have good and quite bad times, let their imagination run wild and look for a treasure and find a friend. A good book to read to children aged 8 or older and a great book for young avid readers.

Includes old drawings.

The Top Secret Diary of Pig

Ranked "The funniest new book this year" in 2013, this is a kind of "diary of a whimpy pig" with a pig scribbling and doodling down its adventures. Since it's written in "pig English", the book's obviously not suitable for children who need to learn English - those who already know it will enjoy pig's special style and his hilarious adventures with his friend duck, who are trying to escape all that trouble on the farm and to find a vegetarian farmer. Age 9 and up.

Doppelband "Is" und "Cold Shoulder Road"
